Workshop and textile collection – Tela Umbra - Città dio Castello

Alice Hallgarten and Leopoldo Franchetti established the Tela Umbra workshop in 1908 because they wanted to keep the tradition of weaving with handlooms going. The workshop is still being used today and the weavers produce fine linen good such as tablecloths, towels and curtains of excellent quality. There is also a museum in the same building. There are nice room that house a collection of unique pieces of textile art. There are Umbrian renaissance tablecloths with decorated motifs, as well as traditional folk materials and lacework and all the equipment that would have been employed to create them.
In one of the rooms a Montessori classroom has been set up because Alice Franchetti firmly in this method. She organized many other social and economic activities in Città di Castello and was interested in preserving the art and craft traditions of the area.
