Palazzo Vitelli a Sant'Egidio Città di Castello Umbria - Italy

Image

This splendi palace was built in the sixteenth century for Paolo II Vitelli (1591-1574). He was a well know leader  who worked for Farnese and the Emperor Carlo V. The architect is not known, but some people suggest Ammanati might be the master. Going up to the first floor we use a wide staircase and enjoy the frescoes of Prospero Fontana on the vaulted ceiling. The walls are decorated with pictures of the achievements of the Vitelli family.

Fontana, Cristofano Gherardi, Orazio Smacchini and Pomarancio were all employed here. There are some rooms with splendid painted, lacunar ceilings and other with vaults and plaster decorations and sixteenth century paintings.

The palace look out onto an oak wood and nymphaeum where there was at one time a splendid Italian garden which extended to the town walk
