Church of Santa Maria Maggiore - Città di Castello - Umbria - Italy

This church dates from 13th century and is dedicate to Santa Maria della neve. When Niccolò Vitelli captured the town in 1482 he chose to rebuild the church with material from the destroyed castle. There is documentary evidence of the building dating from 1483 and 1509.

The façade is very simple and bricks and a cornice have been used. The building was restored in the 1930’s under the direction of mons. Giuseppe Malvestiti. A lot of baroque decorations were removed and the façade and the apse windows were restored.

The interior is a rectangle made up of three naves. The pillars in the central nave from a cross-vault. The vaulting-ribs are made of stone and decorated with the shields and coats of arm of the Vitelli family. The are  is a the far and of the church and on either side there are rectangular chapels. These contain small areas of frescoes from the 15th century and some modern works. At the end of the nave there is a beautiful altar that dates from the 1440’s. We also find a front and painting by Alessandro Bruschetti Baptism of Christ (1939)
