Church of San Francesco Città di Castello - Umbria - Italy
The church of San Francessco was consecrated in 1291and over the years it has been modified many times. The interior has the form of a Latin cross with a single nave. It was entirely altered in the baroque era between 1707 and 1727. At the far and on the left we find the Vitelli chapel that was designed by Giorgio Vasari in the sixteenth century. He also painted a large panel entitled Coronation of the Virgin (1563).
On the altar dedicated to Saint Joseph there is a copy of Raphalel’s Wedding of the Virgin that the Napoleonic troop took away in 1798. The original can now be seen in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The high altar dates from the 14th century and is believed to have been painted by Beato Giacomo an important sculptor. There are lovely 17th century choir stalls in the apse and above them we can see the mechanical organ that was installed in 1763.
It is still played for concerts. The reliquary of Sint Andreaw’s arm created by Lorenzo Ghiberti could once be found in one of the chapels, but is now in the Pinacoteca Comunale.
