Church of San Domenico Città di Castello - Umbria - Italy

This is a very impressive building. There is a single nave and the roof beams are exposed. Thee choir is in the form of a cross. Work began in the 1300’s and was concluded in 1424. The façade is incomplete and to the left we find the bell tower and the ogival arch which show how clever the local workmen were a that time.
There are a number of 14th century frescos that come to light in 1922 when much of the baroque decoration was removed. There were once two authentic, masterpieces at the far and o fthe nave. Rapael’s Crucifixion that was painted for the Gavari family in 1503 and can now be seen in the National Gallery of Londo; and Signorell’s Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. This was painted for the Brozzi family in 1498, and is on display in the Pinacoteca Comunale.
The sixteenth century cloister was part of the convent and can be found next door. It has a double row of arches and was finished between 1662 and 1667.
