Cathedral - San Florido e San Amanzio Città di Castello - Umbria - Italy

The Cathedral is dedicated to saint Flrido and Saint Amanzio. It has been consecrated three times in a thousand years. Traditionally the first cathedral was said to have been built on the ruins of pagan temple by the young Pliny, the patron of Tifernum Tiberinum that is, Città di Castello. In 1032 Bishop Pietro consecrated a second cathedral and dedicated it to the patron Saint of the Town and diocese Saint Florido and Saint Amanzio. In 1540 the third dedication took place influenced by Florentine taste. Work began on the garden façade in 1632 but was interrupted by the death of Bishop Roccagna.
The interior is in the form of a latin cross and has a simple nave and side chapels that link together. These are decorated with fine altars and painting. One of the most importants Nicolò Cirignani’s Conversion fo Saint Paul (late of sixteenth century).
The frescoes is presbytery are by Marco Benefial and date from 1747-1749. They represent Saint Florido and Saint Crescenziano. The decorations on the vaults are also by Benefial.
