Civic Tower - Città di Castello - Umbria - Italy

The civic tower goes back to the fourteenth century and is the true  symbol of a free town. It has a prismatic form and several coats of arms are visible. There Is also the remains of a small roof that gave protection to Luca Signorelli’s fresco of he Madonna con Bambino e santi.

It was painted in 1474 and over the years suffered serious damage from the weather and earthquakes and was finally removed in 1940.

A fragment showing Saint Paul is on display in the Pinacoteca. The tower is also known as the Torre del Vescovo or Bishop’s tower because it can be found next to the Bishop’s palace.
